Removal of the increased components of unemployment benefits

The government has proposed removal of additional increments of unemployment benefits starting from 1 January 2025. Currently, unemployment benefits are paid at an increased rate when an individual participates in employment promoting services (TE-palvelu). In addition, mobility allowance is paid at an increased rate when an individual takes a job or training over 200 kilometers away from their actual place of residence.

On 23 September 2024, the government published a proposal to remove the additional components. According to the proposal, the increment paid during employment promoting services could be paid until the end of the service, if the service has started no later than 31 December 2024. However, the additional component is paid for a maximum of 200 days. If the service is organized in separate periods that do not follow consecutively, the increments would not be paid for service periods starting on or after 1 January 2025.

Mobility allowance could be paid at an increased rate if the work or work-related training entitling to mobility allowance starts no later than 31 December 2024.

This change does not affect the payment of the compensation for expenses. Compensation for expenses can still be paid for most employment-promoting services.

You can find more information about the additional components and compensation for expenses here. More information about mobility allowance can be found here

It is important to note that the government's proposal is still preliminary and may change during the process. We will follow the situation and will inform our members of any potential changes and their impact on unemployment benefits.
